Why "RESIDENCES-San Francisco"? Our initial proposal for RESIDENCES-SAN FRANCISCO is to draw up a starting point, to frame the present moment, to capture the brainstorming of four artists with diverse trajectories, but common links. RESIDENCES-SAN FRANCISCO stands as the beginning of a dialogue, the establishing of a path, a common praxis and conceptual search, that will construct itself in collaboration, in distance and proximity--a conversation understood as a platform on which to build new meanings, dialogues intended to be bridges between those who stayed and those who moved to new lands, a collaboration founded in our understanding of art as a form of research, as an exercise, a search, and also a sort of game.
Although, we share a common origin, as we are all four artists born and bathed by the Mediterranean sun of Almeria, our vital trajectories have taken us to different locations in the planet, a reality of our generation. Moving and taking up residence in new places is an aspect which we necessarily tap into in this project. A motion that took us from Almería to Valencia, and from there to New York and San Francisco only to meet back, many years later, maybe by chance, but certainly by the exponential logic and the possibilities of social networks and today’s communication. And yet in this sort of homecoming and new departure, we are able to agree that ours is no longer a local art, that the creative process in our age, in our lives that have taken us to distant yet welcoming lands, can no longer be local; that our references and concerns, our feelings and emotions, our spiritual and political stance have a global scope, that we all have access to them, and at the same time, we that all claim an interest in an art imbricated in the Mediterranean figurative arts and an attachment to the light of the homeland, to Almería.
